The Pilot is Honda's three-row midsize SUV, redesigned for the 2023 model year on a new platform. It is one of the more capable family SUVs for towing, with a 5,000 lb maximum that matches the Subaru Ascent and Toyota 4Runner (pre-2025). The Pilot is the only Honda vehicle in our priority list, and it serves a different audience than the trucks: families who need seating for seven and occasional towing for boats, campers, or utility trailers.
Every Pilot uses the same 3.5L V6 producing 285 hp. Towing capacity splits by drivetrain: 3,500 lbs in two-wheel drive and 5,000 lbs in all-wheel drive. This is an important distinction because it means the FWD Pilot is limited to light-duty towing while the AWD version handles most recreational loads. The 1,500 lb gap between drivetrains is one of the largest in our data for a single model.
Unlike Subaru, Honda publishes payload and curb weight data for the Pilot. Payload ranges from about 1,420 to 1,625 lbs depending on trim and AWD weight. Curb weight runs from 4,313 lbs for the lightest FWD configuration to 4,685 lbs for the TrailSport and Black Edition AWD trims.
