2025 Toyota 4Runner Towing Capacity

The 2025 4Runner is a ground-up redesign and the start of the sixth generation. The aging 4.0L V6 and five-speed automatic are gone, replaced by the 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder and an eight-speed automatic from the new Tacoma platform. Towing capacity jumps from 5,000 lbs to 6,000 lbs across every trim, a 20% improvement that opens the door to mid-weight travel trailers and larger boat rigs that the old 4Runner could not safely handle.

The trim lineup shrinks from seven options to four. The SR5 and TRD Off-Road use the standard turbo-four, while the Limited and TRD Pro add the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. Despite the hybrid's additional weight (the TRD Pro weighs 5,195 lbs vs. 4,860 for the TRD Off-Road), towing capacity remains 6,000 lbs across all trims. The trade-off shows up in payload instead: the SR5 carries 1,435 lbs while the TRD Pro manages just 1,105 lbs.

For anyone who held off buying a 5th-gen 4Runner because 5,000 lbs was not quite enough, the 2025 solves that problem. And unlike the Tacoma, where the hybrid costs you towing capacity, the 4Runner hybrid maintains the full 6,000 lb rating.
